Current Project:
HILE KHARKA WATER
Reservoir Tank for HEALTH
Introduction HILE KHARKA
Hile Kharka, a Tamang village is located north
west of Kathmandu, can be reached by driving the Pasang
Lhamu Highway and taking a dirt road heading north west
leaving the black toped road. The dirt road was constructed
by the villagers to connect the main highway, which distance
is about 5 kilometers.
The village being located in a very hilly area (elevation
2100m). lacks water source. Therefore pipeline was installed
12 years back with the help of kind Japanese to get the
water from the forest nearby. But due to elevation problem,
the water running through the pipeline is hardly 50% flow
and in few places pipe has to be repaired, replaced &
position changed in order to collect water in reserve tank
on hill top. The reserve tank is in quite bad shape and
requires maintenance now and due to growth in population,
the water is not sufficient for entire village, school and
the Mahadev Temple nearby. Therefore the water has to be
pumped by using solar powered pump for 200 to 300 meters
above to tallest point to reserve in at least 20000 liters
poly tank. The reason to have the reserve tank in the high
place is to make distribution easier and accessible below.
At
present, there are fewer water tap in the village area,
due to which every villager doesn’t have easy access
to the water point; some even have to walk half a kilometer
to get the water. This affects the farming and hygiene of
the village (People wear unclean cloths for a couple of
weeks). Therefore adding up more water points will change
the livelihood of the villagers.
Farming
Hile
Kharka, a village consisting of 750 people (Nearly 90 percent
of the total village population is illiterate) with 150
houses, has to depend on the rain water for farming. They
mostly grows popular Turnips for Kathmandu valley and other
grains like Corn, Millet, Buckwheat and those vegetable
which doesn’t requires plenty of water. However, the
grains they grow are not sufficient to feed their family
for a year. There fore, many adults from the village go
to the main cities like Kathmandu to find a job to support
their family. The locals are mostly farmers, stone labours,
local carpenters and witch doctors. Hile Kharka and nearby
villages produce 15% of milk supply for Kathmandu city.
